No, but it helps. Most servers start you from zero through basic training. However, having a real-world background will speed up your learning of the terminology and discipline. Without it, you'll have a longer learning curve.

Basic training consists of 5 to 20 hours of guided sessions covering drill, weapons handling, radio communication, fundamental tactics and military courtesy. Most servers run basic training as scheduled events, offering 1 to 3 sessions per week.

No. Specialty career tracks like special ops and aviation are typically gated behind demonstrated competency in regular service (generally reaching the rank of corporal or sergeant) and command approval.

Mostly, but with plenty of non-combat content. Patrols, training phases, ceremonies, courts-martial and running base operations account for much of military RP. Moments of actual combat are the highlights, not everyday life.

Most use a soft permadeath rule - a character KIA during a major operation may permadie, but training accidents or minor combat injuries are recoverable. Approval from command staff and the player is normally required for a permanent KIA.

Some do. Joint military and law enforcement ops (counter-narcotics, anti-terrorism) allow for some of the highest quality cross-faction RP. Servers where both sides are strong usually have set policies on jurisdiction and operational coordination.

Most are. Mature themes (combat, military discipline, complicated political situations) fit better with adult communities. There are some 16+ military servers, but they're less common.
